I want to announce an event for the Research community in the Southeastern United States: The Carolina Sugar Workshop. The idea is that a lot of people experienced in or with an interest in using sugar and oxidizer to create rocket propellant will meet at Orangeburg, SC, in the near future to cook up some propellant on-site and exchange ideas and suggestions. The propellant cooking would take place on a Saturday during a standard Commercial motor launch at O'burg, and on Sunday, a TRA Research Event, we would fly or test the motors.

I've asked Jimmy Yawn if he would be interested in coming up from Florida and joining us to add his perspective to the event, and he is definitely interested. He has also suggested another participant who might want to join us. The syllabus for this event would include, but definitely not be limited to:

Choice of sugar. What are the practical differences?
Burn rate modifiers
Techniques for cooking, pouring, cutting, motor construction and humidity protection
Ignition
Choice of Kn

And whatever other subjects pop up during the discussion. The motto for the event be the slogan from the Teach-Ins back in the '60s "If you know, come to teach, if you don't, come to learn, and keep your mind open."

When? The May 5-6 Event at Orangeburg would be the best possible choice because of heat and humidity considerations, but the July 7-8 weekend would also fit our requirements if we can't get our ducks in a row before May.

Please email me [acwhit@nc.rr.com] or Ed Fenton, the prefect of the South Carolina TRA group, if this event interests you at all.
